So, if you're ready to take charge of your mornings and start your day feeling refreshed and energized, read on to learn more about the powerful ingredients behind Rise.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a non-intoxicating compound found in hemp plants. It has been shown to have a wide range of potential health benefits, including reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, and supporting mental well-being. But did you know that CBD can also help balance out some of the unwanted side effects of drinking coffee in the morning?
That's right! While coffee is a great way to start your day and get your energy levels up, it can also cause jitters, anxiety, and nervousness. CBD, on the other hand, has a calming effect on the body and can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. By combining CBD with other natural ingredients like ashwagandha, moringa, and matcha, Rise can help you start your day feeling energized and focused without the unwanted side effects of coffee.
In addition to its calming effects, CBD has also been shown to have a positive impact on sleep quality, which is important for maintaining energy levels throughout the day. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue, decreased focus, and increased stress levels. By promoting a restful night's sleep, CBD can help you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. And when combined with other energizing ingredients like ashwagandha and matcha, Rise can give you the energy and mental clarity you need to tackle even the toughest tasks.
Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is an adaptogenic herb that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It's considered to be one of the most important herbs in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, known for its powerful ability to help the body adapt to stress and promote overall health and wellness. Adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha work by helping to regulate the body's stress response, which can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and promote a greater sense of calm and relaxation.
But ashwagandha's benefits don't stop there. This herb has also been shown to improve brain function and cognitive performance. It's been used traditionally to boost memory and concentration, and modern research has confirmed its ability to enhance mental clarity, focus, and alertness. This makes ashwagandha an ideal ingredient to include in a product designed to help you start your day feeling energized and focused.
Finally, it's worth noting that ashwagandha is also an anti-inflammatory, which can help to reduce inflammation throughout the body. This can be particularly beneficial for those who suffer from joint pain or other inflammatory conditions. Overall, ashwagandha is a powerful herb with a wide range of potential health benefits, making it an excellent addition to the Rise formula.
Moringa is a nutrient-dense plant that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine practices. Also known as the "miracle tree," Moringa contains a variety of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help support overall health and wellness. This powerful ingredient is an excellent source of vitamin C, iron, calcium, and potassium, making it a great choice for anyone looking to improve their daily nutrient intake.
But that's not all, Moringa also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the body, which has been linked to a variety of health issues such as chronic pain and autoimmune disorders. By incorporating Moringa into your daily routine, you can help support your body's natural inflammatory response and promote overall wellness.
Moreover, Moringa is known for its adaptogenic properties, which means it can help the body adapt to stress and support healthy adrenal function. This makes Moringa an excellent choice for those looking to improve their response to stress, support healthy energy levels, and promote a sense of calm and relaxation throughout the day. By including Moringa in your daily routine, you may find that you're better equipped to handle life's daily stressors, both physically and mentally.
Matcha is a type of green tea that has been popular in Japanese culture for centuries. Unlike traditional green tea, matcha is made from ground whole tea leaves, which makes it a more potent source of caffeine and antioxidants. In addition to providing a natural energy boost, matcha is known for its ability to improve mental focus and concentration, as well as reduce stress and anxiety.
Matcha also contains a unique amino acid called L-theanine, which has been shown to promote relaxation without causing drowsiness. This means that, when combined with the caffeine in matcha, L-theanine can help increase alertness and mental clarity, without the jittery feeling often associated with coffee or other sources of caffeine. Plus, the combination of L-theanine and caffeine has been shown to enhance memory and cognitive performance, making matcha an ideal choice for anyone looking to boost their productivity and focus.
Another benefit of matcha is its high antioxidant content. Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the body from free radicals, which can cause cell damage and lead to chronic diseases. Matcha is particularly rich in a type of antioxidant called catechins, which have been shown to reduce inflammation and lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses. By incorporating matcha into your daily routine, you can not only enjoy a natural energy boost, but also give your body the antioxidant support it needs to stay healthy and vibrant.
In conclusion, Rise is more than just a CBD supplement. It’s a powerful blend of adaptogens and superfoods that work together to support your body's natural energy levels and enhance your mental clarity, focus, and concentration. By incorporating Rise into your daily routine, you can start your day feeling refreshed and energized, ready to take on whatever challenges come your way.
So, the next time you're reaching for that second or third cup of coffee to get through the day, consider giving Rise a try instead. ]]>Thankfully, there are natural remedies that can help you get the restful sleep you need, without the side effects of traditional sleep aids. At UnCanny Wellness, we've developed a new formula called Rest, which combines the power of water soluble CBD powder, CBN, valerian, and chamomile to help you unwind and get the restorative sleep your body craves.
In this article, we'll take a closer look at each of the ingredients in Rest and explore how they work together to promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. We'll also share some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your Rest capsules, and discuss the benefits of using natural sleep aids over traditional pharmaceuticals. So grab a cup of chamomile tea, kick back, and get ready to discover the secrets of a good night's sleep with Rest.
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a natural compound found in hemp plants that has been making waves in the natural supplement world. But what's all the fuss about?
Well, for one, CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), which helps regulate various functions such as sleep, mood, and appetite. This means that when you take CBD, you're inviting a new superhero to the party - one that's really good at calming your mind and body.
CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, and promote feelings of relaxation. In fact, one study found that CBD helped people with insomnia fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Another study found that CBD reduced anxiety in people with social anxiety disorder.
At UnCanny Wellness, we use a broad-spectrum formula in our Rest capsules, which means that our CBD extract contains a range of beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes, without any THC. We also use water-soluble CBD powder in our formula, making it more easily absorbed by the body so you can feel the effects faster and more strongly. Plus, our CBD is rigorously tested for purity and potency, so you can trust that you're getting the best of the best.
So, to sum it up: CBD is a natural compound found in hemp plants that interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality. And when you choose UnCanny Wellness Rest capsules, you're getting a broad-spectrum formula with the best CBD out there.
CBN, short for cannabinol, is another cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, and is known for its sedative properties. While research on CBN is still in its early stages, early studies have shown promising results in promoting relaxation and sleep.
CBN works by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system, similar to CBD. However, CBN is believed to have a stronger affinity for the CB2 receptors in the body, which are primarily found in the immune system and peripheral tissues.
This interaction with the CB2 receptors is what makes CBN a potential game-changer when it comes to promoting relaxation and sleep. Some studies have even shown that CBN may be more effective at promoting sleep than traditional sleep aids.
At UnCanny Wellness, we've carefully blended CBN into our Rest capsules to help you get a restful night's sleep. Our formula contains the perfect amount of CBN to work in synergy with our other natural ingredients, such as valerian and chamomile, to promote relaxation and reduce stress levels.
So, to sum it up: CBN is a natural compound found in the hemp plant that interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system to promote relaxation and sleep. At UnCanny Wellness, we've carefully blended CBN into our Rest capsules to give you the best possible sleep support.
Valerian is a perennial flowering plant that has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for anxiety, insomnia, and other sleep disorders. Valerian root contains compounds that interact with the GABA receptors in the brain, which are responsible for regulating the nervous system and promoting relaxation.
Valerian has been shown to improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. One study found that valerian was effective at improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia symptoms in women going through menopause.
At UnCanny Wellness, we've included valerian in our Rest capsules to enhance the calming and sleep-promoting effects of our formula. By combining valerian with our other natural ingredients, such as CBD and CBN, we've created a potent blend that works together to help you unwind and get a restful night's sleep.
Chamomile is a gentle herb that has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for anxiety and sleep disorders. It is best known for its calming and soothing effects on the mind and body, and is often used to promote relaxation and reduce stress levels.
Chamomile contains several compounds, including apigenin, which is believed to have a sedative effect on the body. Some studies have also shown that chamomile may be effective at reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
At UnCanny Wellness, we've included chamomile in our Rest capsules to complement the calming effects of our other natural ingredients. By combining chamomile with CBD, CBN, and valerian, we've created a powerful blend that helps you unwind and get a restful night's sleep.
In today's fast-paced world, getting a good night's sleep is more important than ever. It's the foundation of our physical and mental health, and without it, we simply can't function at our best. That's why we created Rest, a natural and effective sleep aid that can help you get the restful, restorative sleep your body needs to thrive.

We created our CBD to solve this specific issue, as well as to implement new technology that increases the absorption rate. What is one thing that most people do on a daily basis and never skip? Coffee.
Our CBD blends are meant to be added directly into your coffee and to balance out the less than ideal effects of coffee. Through a process called nano-emulsification, we are able to break down CBD molecules so that they are water soluble. This increases bioavailability and makes the CBD have much more of an effect.
CBD Barista Blend - Our best seller and most popular product, the Barista Blend is the perfect addition to your morning coffee.
Be consistent! If you really want to have the best experience with CBD, your body will need to get used to it, so have a schedule and don't forget about it. While studies suggest that there are no negative effects of CBD, it will work best when you're consistent.
Figure out your dosage. This can be rather tricky, so we suggest that you start on a low dose and work your way up until you are getting the desired effects.

For most people, a morning cup of coffee is as vital to them as brushing their teeth. But, coffee hasn't changed much over the last few decades.
It's time to step up your coffee game by adding water soluble CBD and evening out the negative effects that people get from the caffeine spike and drop.
It all starts with finding the right CBD to use.
It is imperative to use CBD that has gone through the nano-emulsification process and has become water soluble. This allows your body to break it down and absorb it at a rate much greater than traditional CBD oils.

This was an everyday issue until I found water soluble CBD.
While I must admit, I had tried other types of CBD, I hadn't found the same relief that this had. What I later found out was that by making CBD water soluble through a process called nano-emulsification, your body's absorption rate skyrockets.
So what changed? The CBD seemed to elongate the caffeine while reducing the after effects in the crash. Along with that, I maintained normal body temperature throughout the day, not finding myself with sweaty armpits at the desk.
I can confidently say that water soluble CBD has become just as important in my life as coffee is."

Water Soluble CBD and Oil Soluble CBD.
Most of the products on the market are oil soluble CBD, this is because it is an easier process and typically mixed with a carrier oil such as MCT or sunflower oil. The problem with oil soluble CBD is that your body has an extemely difficult time breaking it down and absorbing it.
Water soluble CBD, on the other hand, is very easy for your body to absorb and get the desired effects out of. The process of breaking CBD down so that it is able to be absorbed easily is through a process called Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System [SEDDS].
Our most popular ways people take CBD is by adding it to their daily coffees, smoothies, teas and water. It is important to note that in order to use these methods, your CBD must be Water Soluble.
CBD for coffee - for an easy CBD coffee recipe, watch the video below!
Adding water soluble CBD to any water based drink is easy; just add your desired amount and drink away!
Water Soluble CBD is better absorbed by the body when swallowed. When swallowed, CBD in oil form only has 10-20% bioavailability. That means if you take a 20mg dose, you might only be absorbing 2-4mg of actual CBD. In order to consume CBD oil properly, you have to hold it under your tongue, absorbing it sublingually.
Luckily, this problem of absorption when swallowed (oral bioavailability) is relatively common in drug delivery science. Lot's of drug compounds are naturally oil-soluble. Techniques have been developed to convert these from an oil into a format that is better absorbed in the body and easier to administer.
Using these special techniques to convert the CBD from being oil-soluble to water-soluble means that you can just swallow the CBD and your body will absorb more of it, increasing the desired effects.
CBD oil can only mix in with other oils. That's what oil-soluble means. But most of what's out there that you'd want to incorporate CBD into is not an oil. Coffee, tea, water, juice, smoothies, dog food - all of that is going into the stomach and therefore requires a form of CBD that can be effectively absorbed in the stomach.
If you've ever tried to mix CBD oil into a cup of tea, or a cocktail, you quickly find out that it doesn't work. The oil floats to the top and sticks to the sides, it tastes terrible, and then after going through all the trouble to swallow it down you only absorb a fraction of the actual dose you're expecting. Please don't be that person.
Because CBD is more more bioavailable when swallowed than oil, it means you can take less and absorb more - it's more potent. For example, if you swallowed a 10mg CBD oil-filled capsule you might only be absorbing 1-2mg of CBD - but if you swallowed a 10mg dose of a water soluble CBD-filled capsule you will be absorbing 9-10mg!
This is particularly important to understand when choosing the right product. So many companies out there sell cheap oil-based products at a premium just because they have high mg dosage and some shiny branding. Let's be real, CBD products can be expensive and you deserve to get the most potent product that will work the best for you.
If you walk into the health department of any store and you'll see that it's dominated by pills and powders. There might be a bit of shelf space dedicated to oil-based herbal tinctures, but people clearly prefer to consume their superfoods and supplements in pill or powder form. It's just so much easier.
Most people out there, probably you included, would rather not hold an oil-based tincture under their tongue. It can be pretty gross tasting and isn't very uncomfortable. Alternatively, a water soluble CBD capsule effortlessly fits into anyones existing vitamin or supplement routine. Or in powder form, you can easily infuse any of your favorite drinks and foods that you already love to consume, at whatever dose you need at that time.
At the end of the day it's all about getting high quality CBD to more people so that they can feel better and live a better life. We're all burdened with something 'off' from time to time, whether it's feeling overwhelmed with the state of the world, muscle soreness after a workout or aching joints from a long life well lived.
Using the the right quality products is key to supporting your self and your loved ones, and water soluble CBD products are more effective and easier to use than CBD oil products.

With all of the information circling around the internet, finding out if CBD is safe for children is rather difficult. So, let us break it down for you.
The short answer, studies suggest yes.
As of January 2021, the only FDA-approved CBD pharmacutical is made specifically for children. It is made to combat epilepsy, called Epidiolex. While many studies have been done on CBD's effects on ailments, it's ability to combat epilepsy is rather inarguable.

As of January 2021, the only FDA-approved CBD pharmacutical is made specifically for children. It is made to combat epilepsy, called Epidiolex. While many studies have been done on CBD's effects on ailments, it's ability to combat epilepsy is rather inarguable.
CBD is a compound that was first isolated in 1940 and is found in the Cannabis plant. It has been in use for decades but has recently become widely used and featured in the medical community for its ability to treat anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain and others.
Available in the form of vaping, oils, lotions, coffee, gummies, and many others. CBD is commonly extracted and combined with a carrier oil such as MCT oil. A new development in the CBD industry is the ability to isolate it to be able to make it water soluble, bulstering it's ability to be absorbed into the body and exceed expectations. Check out our water soluble CBD products.
Not only are adults experimenting with CBD for whatever is bothering them, increasingly parents are turning to CBD to help their kids calm down, focus and get better sleep among others.
While there are many different ways to give it to kids, one of the easiest way to give CBD to children is by simply putting water soluble CBD into their morning cup of water or in capsule form, available here.
Another great thing about CBD, is that through all of the studies done, there have been no links to any form of dependence on the compound.
As for effectiveness, the World Health Organization noted that several clinical trials had shown effectiveness for epilepsy, adding: “There is also preliminary evidence that CBD may be a useful treatment for a number of other medical conditions.”
It is still the early days for CBD in the medical field, but so far the research is suggesting that it is safe for use by children. If you ever have questions regarding how to give CBD to your child, please reach out to us at UnCanny Wellness, we are happy to help and be transparent.
As a general rule, we recommend speaking to your child's physician before giving them any form of CBD.

]]>CBD and Coffee are a match made in heaven. It’s a morning beverage loved (sometimes to the point of addiction) by so many all over the world. That lovely bean juice fires up your brains, activates your bowels, and launches you into the day.
But that energy boost often comes with some undesirable side effects. The jittery, edgy sensation caused by caffeine is something that any regular coffee drinker has experienced at one point or another.
Drinking coffee triggers the ‘fight or flight’ response in your body. It’s what picks you up and gets you going, but also boosts your adrenaline. It’s the increase in adrenaline that produces the side effects of coffee you don’t want.
Luckily, CBD is the perfect compliment to those chemical reactions happening in your body. CBD interacts with many different systems in your body, including the nervous system. It’s used by many for its relaxing, anxiousness-reducing properties.
The relaxing, stress-relieving effects of CBD are exactly why it’s great to consume with coffee. When the two are combined, you still have the heightened energy and focus from the caffeine, but the CBD suppresses the production of adrenaline to a healthy level.
A common misconception is that they simply ‘cancel each other out’ because CBD is calming and caffeine fires you up. But in fact, the opposite is true! They work together synergistically to create a more balanced cup and overall enjoyable experience.
Also, adding CBD into your coffee is a great way to slip something beneficial for you into your daily ritual!
HOW TO MAKE CBD COFFEE THE WRONG WAY :(
There’s really one big consideration to keep in mind when making CBD coffee to ensure that you’re doing it right. Making this common mistake will certainly lead to a bad experience. You won’t end up enjoying your coffee and you won’t get the desired effects you’re looking for. So, please, keep this in mind - don’t use CBD Oil!
CBD is naturally and most commonly found in oil form, but there are a couple big problems you’ll encounter when trying to make CBD coffee with oil.
HOW TO MAKE CBD COFFEE THE RIGHT WAY :)
Once you have the right form of CBD, making CBD coffee is really quite simple. We at UnCanny Wellness specialize in Water Soluble CBD that’s designed to go into any drink, including coffee. We convert the CBD oil into a format that solves both of the problems mentioned above.
Using our Water Soluble CBD Powder gives you the ease of use and efficacy that you’re looking for when making CBD coffee. Here’s how to do it.
The above steps are true for any hot drink, not just coffee. If you want to infuse CBD into a cold drink, you can follow the same steps and just mix it up a bit more.
Using a Water Soluble CBD Powder to make CBD Coffee is definitely the easiest, most versatile, and most effective way to go. You can choose the exact dose you want, use your favorite brewing technique, and ultimately fine-tune your experience so that you get the perfect cup, every time!

We are likely to see a shift from the U.S. Department of Justice in their treatment toward the industrial hemp plant which began with Jeff Sessions under the beginning years of the Trump Administration and moved forward under Barr.
We’re also likely to see new leadership positions at the FDA. This may lead to the an end of the stalemate as it relates to creating rules for extracts derived from the industrial hemp plant. This action by the FDA will likely take precedence and have a major impact around the world as we have seen revolving hemp extract regulations policies and court decisions come out in recent weeks.

Hemp-derived CBD is sourced from industrial hemp plants, which are grown primarily for their fiber and seeds. Hemp plants tend to differ from marijuana plants in appearance; they are often skinny and scarce in foliage. Hemp is also differentiated from marijuana by its levels of the psychoactive ingredient, THC. Under U.S. law a hemp plant must contain no more than 0.3% THC.
]]>While the history of CBD dates back much further, the main discovery of it was in 1942, when a chemist named Roger Adams was able to isolate the first Cannabidiol (CBD).
But where does it come from? Two places
Marijuana-derived CBD is extracted from marijuana plants that have thick, lush foliage and flowers that are generally grown and consumed for their intoxicating properties. The U.S. government defines marijuana plants as those which contain more than 0.3% THC. While most marijuana plants contain THC as the predominant cannabinoid, there are several strains of marijuana that are rich in CBD.
That being said, whether CBD is extracted from hemp or marijuana, it remains identical on a molecular level.

]]>As more and more information has been coming out regarding the science behind CBD and wellness, people are beginning to make the switch to water soluble CBD.
This is happening due to two main reasons; bioavailability and usability.
]]>This is happening due to two main reasons; bioavailability and usability.
With traditional CBD oils, almost 90% of the dose you consumed is passed through your body before being absorbed into your gastrointestinal tract, making the effect significantly lower than if you had taken the same dose but of water soluble CBD.
This is because water soluble CBD is broken down to the nanoparticle level and is bonded with elements to make it more digestible and thus carries more bioavailability.
The second main reason is usability. Water soluble CBD is much more practical for everyday life as we are constantly drinking and consuming water based food and drinks.
Our CBD products at UnCanny Wellness are all water soluble so you can focus more on your day and less on how to mix your CBD.

The terms 'full spectrum', 'broad spectrum', and 'isolate' are often used in the Hemp CBD industry but many people remain confused as to what the difference actually is. It's pretty simple...
Full spectrum extracts contain the CBD + all other compounds naturally present which creates a solution that is commonly referred to as the "entourage effect". Broad spectrum extracts contain the CBD + some other compounds naturally present. Isolate extracts contain only CBD + no other compounds naturally present.
While there are varying views on which type of extract is the most beneficial, it is commonly situational. This video breaks all that down into more detail in a simple way to help you really understand what others are talking about.
At UnCanny Wellness, we make broad spectrum CBD so that it is usable for all. We want to assure our customers that all of our products contain less than .03% D9 THC.

]]>So, here are two key terms that we think you should know and understand; Bioavailability and Water Soluble CBD.
Bioavailability is the proportion of a drug or other substance which enters the circulation when introduced into the body and is able to have an active effect, in other words it is the amount of a substance that gets absorbed compared to the amount you actually ingested/took. This leads me to the second keyword -
Water Soluble CBD. Commonly, CBD is found as an oil based product mixed with a carrier oil (MCT Oil, Sunflower Oil, ect.) and is highly non bioavailable as the oil is not easily absorbed into your gastrointestinal tract.
Water Soluble CBD on the other hand fixes that problem by breaking it down and makes the CBD highly bioavailable so you can get much more out of your products.
All UnCanny Wellness products are water-soluble and are exceptionally bioavailable. We use broad spectrum, legally grown hemp to ensure consistency and quality.
In this video, UnCanny Wellness Founder, Alex Corren, explains the two keywords in depth and breaks down how our products differ from most on the market. For more info or to purchase your own, visit www.uncannywellness.com.

Hemp has the capacity to interrupt the normal course of many different industries. Food, fiber, fuel, materials science, healthcare... no industry is safe from hemp's myriad of use cases. There are billions of dollars on the line in these industries, providing a strong incentive to maintain the norm and prevent and disruptors from reaching its full potential. Here's a glance at some of the industries that hemp has the ability to 'disrupt'.
Naturally, this leads to a lot of important questions. What changed that led to the hemp plant being so restricted? And what about the hemp's resurgence makes it so 'disruptive' today?
Hemp has the capacity to "interrupt the normal course" of many different industries. Food, fiber, fuel, materials science, healthcare... no industry is safe from hemp's myriad uses. There are billions of dollars on the line in these industries, providing a strong incentive to maintain the norm and prevent any disruptors from reaching their full potential. Here's a glance at some of the industries that hemp has the ability to 'disrupt'.
Hemp can be used as fuel, plain and simple. We've known this for a long time. In fact, the original Model T car designed by Henry Ford was built with a hemp body and designed to run on hemp fuel!
It's pretty obvious why the fossil fuel industry would consider a blossoming hemp-based biofuel industry as a major disruptor to their business model... these goliath oil companies have more money than most nations and are not excited about a plant that can be grown anywhere being turned into fuel, allowing people to get off their addiction to petroleum fuels.
These massive companies have so much power and influence over our government, there's no doubt that they're strongly anti-hemp and view it as a threat to their bottom line and business model. Anybody can grow a field of hemp... but very few people can extract oil from the earth.
Hemp can be used to make plastic products - non-toxic and biodegradable. At UnCanny we actually use 3D printed hemp plastic scoopers in every jar of the Barista Blend!
Similar to the oil and gas industry, the plastic industry is almost entirely chemical / petroleum based and having a quick and easy-to-grow alternative that can't be patented or controlled is counter to their business model. Again, with so much money on the line there's a great incentive to keep hemp at bay, preventing it from disrupting the status quo.
When hemp was initially made illegal in the early 1900s, a big reason was because it was seen as a direct threat to the timber industry. Now nearly 100 years later we've cut down almost all of our old growth forests and have seen habitat destruction everywhere on this beautiful planet.
Hemp can be used to make anything that a tree makes. We at UnCanny use hemp paper for all of our marketing materials and for the box of the Barista Blend single serve packets.
Paper, toilet paper, construction material... anything is made from trees can and should be made from hemp. Trees take decades to grow, provide valuable ecosystem services and habitat for dozens of species on any given piece of earth. On the other hand, hemp grows to maturity in a couple months and grows with minimal inputs.
Hemp has one of the most nutrition packed seeds on the planet. It's an incredible source of plant-based protein and has the perfect balance of essential fatty acids that the human body needs, even better than fish oil. As amazing as the hemp seed is nutritionally, it still faces huge regulatory hurdles coming to market and feeding the world because after all, it is a product derived from the cannabis plant.
The mighty hemp seed can commonly be found as hemp hearts, hemp flour, or hemp seed oil - all of which have different culinary applications and are incredibly healthy. Hemp can be grown all over the world and act as a blanket of much needed food security. Eat more hemp seeds.
Hemp can be used in high-technology applications like computer chips and battery technology. The carbon-derived from hemp has even surprised scientists as a great source of carbon for creating graphene - a major disruptor in the realm of materials science.
The computer that I'm typing this on and the phone that you're likely reading this on is filled with components that can be replaced by more natural materials. Right now, rare earth metals are mined to support the needs of technological advancement, but hemp can allow us to grow some of the base resources needed for these technologies.
The cannabis plant, which encompasses both marijuana and hemp, is rich in a complex array of highly beneficial plant compounds. In particular, it's rich in Cannabinoids, which play a critical role in the healthy and full functioning of our nervous and immune system and so many other pathways in our body. This is one of the most disruptive qualities of the cannabis plant.
Just like fossil fuel industry, the pharmaceutical industry has billions of dollars on the line, huge lobbying power and influence over the government, and a direct incentive to squash any potential natural remedies. Despite the fact that the cannabis plant has been used medicinally for thousands of years, and the fact that the US government has a patent on the therapeutic potential for cannabis, marijuana remains a schedule 1 drug in the same category as heroin, and hemp continues to be treated unfairly by the FDA, DEA and USDA.
I can't write more about the how hemp can disrupt the healthcare industry in this article without bordering on dangerous 'health claims' that could get us in trouble... so I'll let you fill in the gaps. Just follow the money. With billions of dollars of chemical-based, patented pharmaceuticals on the line some people would rather not have you grow a potentially therapeutic plant in your backyard.
This should only serve as an introduction, a launching point for you to do more of your own research into whichever of the many applications of the hemp plant that piques your interest. One thing is for sure - hemp is a plant for the people. It is supportive of healthy humans and a healthy planet, and disruptive to legacy industries that are largely responsible for so much of the destruction we've seen on this planet.
Do you want to see more hemp in the world? Do you want hemp to return to its rightful place as a plant ally for all of humanity and the earth itself? Do you want to help hemp disrupt these industries so that we can move towards more natural solutions?
The best thing you can do is to support hemp companies - like us at UnCanny Wellness :) But we're definitely not the only ones. We and the other brands with integrity working with this powerful plant rely on people like you to keep our business growing. Voting with your dollar is one of the best ways to help get this plant back in the ground so we can disrupt the status quo and move towards a sustainable and regenerative future!

Water soluble CBD is going to be a huge part of the future of CBD product development. Once you understand why it becomes clear. Here are the 4 important reasons why water soluble CBD is better than CBD oil.
]]>But do you actually understand why water soluble CBD is better than normal CBD oil?
Most of the products available out there today are oil-based. Tinctures, creams, salves, vapes... all oil-based products. The literal CBD oil is simply an ingredient in those varying formulations.
We have to remember that this industry is very young, and it's only a couple years ago that people were literally selling plastic syringes full of raw CBD oil. Let me tell you, that is some intensely bitter, foul tasting stuff!
Water soluble CBD is going to be a huge part of the future of CBD product development. Once you understand why it becomes clear. Here are the 4 important reasons why water soluble CBD is better than CBD oil.

As someone in the CBD industry who has been studying the science of the cannabis plant for the past 5 years, I was naturally intrigued by these claims. After all, we already know a lot about the incredible benefits of cannabis and CBD, so it wouldn’t be too surprising if there was some truth to that claim.
I decided to investigate.
Here’s an overview of the initial science regarding CBD and Covid-19. But first, some quick housekeeping.
I’m not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is just an analysis of publicly available science that anyone can look up. Do your own research. None of these statements have been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Our products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
First, high-CBD extracts are able to “downregulate the expression of the two key receptors for SARS-CoV2”. More simply, that means the Covid-19 virus would have a harder time infecting our body. Receptors in the body kind of work like a lock and key. In this case, Covid-19 is the key and the receptors are the locks. CBD might be able to change the locks enough so that the key can’t get in.
Another point, CBD is known to “exert a wide range of immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects” and can also lessen “uncontrolled cytokine production”. It implies that CBD can help to regulate the immune system and is recognized to have anti-inflammatory effects. Cytokines are these small proteins our body makes that helps with cell signaling. They’re essential for many functions including the functioning of our immune system.
However, too much of anything can become a bad thing. Overproduction of these cytokines is called a “cytokine storm” and can actually lead to inflammation and cause disease or death. These cytokine storms are suspected to be the main cause of death in the 1918 “Spanish Flu” pandemic. Some deaths from our current Covid-19 pandemic have also been attributed to cytokine storms.
CBD has also been shown to “display direct antiviral activity.” That’s because it binds to a receptor (known as PPARy) that is present almost everywhere in your body and plays a role in the response to viruses.
That same PPARy receptor can “improve lung function in recovered patients”.
In particular, they talk a lot about the potential for CBD to reduce cytokine production to hopefully avoid those cytokine storms.
They say CBD can “inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines that have been associated with SARS-CoV2 induced multi-organ pathology and mortality,” and that in mouse studies CBD was able to “decrease lung inflammation,” potentially through “inhibition of proinflammatory cytokine production by immune cells and suppressing exuberant immune responses.” I really appreciate their choice of the word ‘exuberant’ there.
This article brought up two other good points to consider when looking at our current Covid-19 global situation. First, CBD has a high-margin of safety and is well tolerated even at very high doses of up to 1500 mg/day for two weeks! That means that people can do a high-dose treatment and not experience the negative side effects that are all-too common with traditional pharmaceuticals.
Last, but certainly not least, the article goes on to say this: “The many uncertainties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic such as the status of the economy, employment and loss of connection can fuel depression, fear and anxiety. CBD has shown promise as an alternative therapy for the clinical management of anxiety disorders.” Our mental health should be a very important part of the conversation around Covid-19 and is a real consequence of all that’s happening in our world today.
As that article puts it, “It is not clear whether the anti-inflammatory activity of CBD, thought to be an attribute when considering their therapeutic potential for many diseases, would be an advantage or a disadvantage when considering cannabinoids as treatment for viruses.”
Sometimes an inflammatory response is good and necessary to return to health, but other times (like in the case of a cytokine storm) an inflammatory response is bad. “Anti-inflammatory activity may not be an advantage when combating viruses because it may mitigate host immune responses to acute viral infections, leading to disease progression and possibly death.” Nobody wants that. But with a healthy dose of scientific skepticism in mind, the article does clearly say that “CBD has several characteristics that make it an appealing agent to explore for antiviral activity”.
It’s clearly too early to jump to conclusions. We need more clean data, more well-designed studies and more science divorced from conflicting financial interests. There is a limited but growing body of research for CBD, but Covid-19 is still very new and we’re learning more about it all the time.
This is an exciting moment in history for science and the cannabis plant, and a challenging time for us all. If we take care of ourselves and our loved ones, question our sources of information and do our own research, we’ll be able to come out of this pandemic stronger than ever.
]]>Scientists in the 1970s started to learn that endocannabinoids were involved in a variety of fundamental biological processes, including those related to food and appetite. 30 years later they finally discovered endocannabinoids in human breast milk. Naturally, this led researchers to investigate further. What they found out is fascinating.
They performed experiments to determine what effect cannabinoids have on the stimulus for newborns to start drinking milk. The results were clear. Cannabinoids are critical for the development of a newborn’s appetite. Without it they may not have the urge to suckle milk and could very well not survive.
We used to think that a newborn suckling for milk was a purely instinctual reaction, but now we understand that it is at least in part triggered by the activation of the CB1 receptor. That happens to be the same receptor that is activated when THC is consumed and people get the ‘munchies’.
But it’s not just about newborns learning to feed, it’s also about the critical influence that cannabinoids play in pre and postnatal development. Cannabinoids support the healthy development and functioning of the nervous system, immune system, brain neurons and more.
A common question that gets asked is, is CBD safe for children? The research certainly indicates that cannabinoids like CBD are essential for full bodily functioning at every stage of life, and that they’re fundamental to the healthy development of human beings.
All humans are born with cannabinoid receptors for a reason. These cannabinoid receptors are found throughout the body on our organs and brain. Studies have even shown by 14 weeks into gestation a fetus has already developed CB1 receptors! Cannabinoids are an absolutely vital component of a healthy fully functioning human body.
It makes perfect sense that something so critical to our wellbeing would be found in high concentration in human breast milk - a fluid that evolved over millennia to be the perfect source of nutrition for the newborn baby of that species.
Of course, discretion should always be used when purchasing a CBD product or any other product containing cannabinoids for a human of any age. You want to make sure that the other ingredients in the product are pure and clean. Unfortunately, there are some ‘bad actor’ companies out there that include ingredients that are unnecessary or worse - legitimately harmful - in their formulations.
One interesting implication of this research relates to baby formula. If for whatever reason a mother is not able to breastfeed her child, perhaps the baby formula should contain a carefully calculated dose of cannabinoids to more closely mimic what is found in natural breast milk. Studies have shown the breastfed babies end up being healthier than babies that were given formula. Cannabinoids might be the missing component to those formulas, and adding them back into formula might ensure that the baby gets the nutrition as well as the building blocks needed for the healthy development of critical systems and pathways in the body.

With such a wide range of CBD products available on the market and a mixture of messaging coming from seemingly everywhere, it’s understandably difficult for new CBD users to figure out how much CBD they should be taking. The truth is that there is no one clear answer to that question. It depends on a few different important factors. What is right for Person A might be a lot less than what is right for Person B. Only after considering all the variables will you be able to determine what the right dose is for you.
]]>
What are you trying to achieve?
People take CBD products for a wide variety of reasons, and the proper dose will change depending on what the outcome is that an individual is trying to achieve. For example, an individual taking CBD before going to work to reduce stress might only take a 10-20mg dose on days that they know are going to be challenging. But a person taking CBD to reduce pain from a back injury they got 10 years ago in a car accident might take 50mg or more every day to help manage their symptoms.
CBD can be used regularly and situationally. A regular use case could look like taking a CBD supplement every day for general health maintenance and wellbeing - to get healthy and stay healthy. A situational use case could look like taking CBD only when you feel a headache coming on, or if you injure yourself and want to immediately reduce the inflammation. Of course, it can be used in both ways, taken daily in low doses and increasing the dose situationally as needed.
What is your starting point?
CBD interacts with a complex web of receptors and systems all over your body. In particular, the Endocannabinoid System is the ‘home base’ of cannabinoids like CBD and plays a fundamental role in the functioning of your nervous and immune systems, as well as other critical pathways in the body pertaining to sleep, mood, memory, appetite, and so much more.
The state of these systems will vary from person to person. We all have unique internal chemistry for CBD to interact with. For that reason, if you have two people that want to take CBD to achieve the same health outcome, they might need to take different doses to land on what is perfect for them as a biochemically unique individual.
What product are you using?
An often overlooked factor that greatly contributes to the finding the right dose of CBD is the type of product that you are using. This is important because of something called bioavailability, which is the amount of any given drug compound that gets effectively absorbed into your body compared to the original dose you take. Basically, if you took a 10mg CBD dose and only absorbed 5mg, it would be 50% bioavailable.
Not all CBD products are created equally. The bioavailability of CBD will vary greatly based on the way that you’re introducing it to your body. Many topical applications, like creams and salves, only have around 50% bioavailability. Oil-based tinctures that are swallowed instead of held under the tongue can have bioavailability as low as 10%. Smoking or vaping CBD has relatively high bioavailability, right around 70%.
Ultimately, the best type of product for you to use is one that fits into your routine and lifestyle so that you actually take it. That being said, it’s important to consider the bioavailability of what you choose so that you can properly take into consideration what you’ll actually be absorbing into the body. At UnCanny Wellness, all of our products are made with a water-soluble CBD that has been converted from its original oil form specifically for optimal absorption in the stomach. The technique we use allows you to swallow the CBD and get 90% or more bioavailability.
What form of extract is it?
There are three types of hemp-derived CBD extracts used in products: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate. Studies have shown that full-spectrum and broad-spectrum products are more effective than isolates. That means you need to use less of a full/broad spectrum extract than you would isolate in order to achieve the same results.
This is because of something known as the Entourage Effect, which is a phenomenon where the other natural compounds found in the extract add to the benefit of CBD, making it more potent than just CBD alone. Full and broad spectrum extracts contain an array of other natural cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, polyphenols, etc., whereas isolate contains only CBD and nothing else.
_
Now you can understand why there is no one ‘right answer’ for how much CBD you should take. There are a lot of moving parts and variables for you to consider. A great way to approach it to find the perfect dose that works for you is to ‘start low and go slow’, adjusting how much and how often you take it until you find your personal sweet spot.
]]>When a society faces a majorly disruptive and challenging event like the current Covid-19 pandemic, a lot gets revealed. It’s a lifting of the curtain that shows us who our true leaders are, what systems are working or failing, and what business or services truly deem essential. With so much being exposed, the hypocrisy of cannabis law is more apparent now than ever before.
When a society faces a majorly disruptive and challenging event like the current Covid-19 pandemic, a lot gets revealed. It’s a lifting of the curtain that shows us who our true leaders are, what systems are working or failing, and what business or services truly deem essential. With so much being exposed, the hypocrisy of cannabis law is more apparent now than ever before.
Marijuana is still considered to be a Schedule 1 controlled substance on the Federal level. That puts it in the same category as heroin. Hemp was insanely lumped into that category as well until the December 2018 Farm Bill legally separated it from marijuana. Over the past few years we've been seeing the meteoric rise of legal cannabis businesses all over the country. Whether recreational or medical, most states have some laws in place with a form of legal marijuana. Most of those states now officially consider Marijuana to be an ‘essential business’.
We’re all sitting at home right now practicing social distancing, only allowed to make trips to businesses are considered ‘essential’. In some parts of the U.S. you could get arrested for selling or buying pot. However, people living in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington state or D.C. all have access to legal marijuana because it’s been deemed to be an essential business.
The crazy part is not that marijuana is being considered an essential business. It definitely is. It provides millions of people with a healthy, natural form of relief from many diseases. It’s also a far safer and healthier social activity to engage in than consuming alcohol. What is crazy is that people are still spending their life behind bars for being involved with marijuana while people today are being told by the government that it is essential for them to stay home and order weed to their door!
A prime example of this criminal injustice is the case of John Knock. He’s 72 years old and has already served 24 years behind bars… only a dent in his sentence of two life sentences plus twenty years for his first offense of non-violent involvement selling marijuana. The fact that he’s been locked up for so long is completely unjust, especially now that the sale of marijuana is considered essential business amidst a public health crisis.
The reality is that you don’t need to end up in jail for a marijuana charge to negatively impact your life. Many people are charged for marijuana ‘crimes’ and are propelled into a chain of other legal and financial trouble, like not being able to get a job or losing access to important government programs.
The Federal Government makes marijuana businesses pay income tax but has disqualified them from the CARES act that is helping businesses all over the country stay afloat during this pandemic and economic downturn. You’d think that with over $13 billion of legal marijuana sales in 2019 that some federal relief funds would be available for these businesses. Unfortunately that’s not the case.
They won’t provide any support in a time of need when these very businesses are considered essential but are happy to tax marijuana businesses extra and arrest people for marijuana-related crimes. Collectively, states spend over $3.6 billion enforcing marijuana laws every year. With average annual costs of incarceration being around $28,000 per inmate, it's massively expensive to keep this up.
A disproportionate amount of the enforcement and arrests is concentrated on communities of color. The data shows that despite equal usage rates, black people are nearly four times more likely than white people to be arrested for marijuana possession. In some states that statistic doubles to 8 times more likely.
Arresting nonviolent marijuana offenders has been a huge player in the mass incarceration that’s taking place here in the US. Although we only have 5% of the global population, we have nearly 25% of the global prison population!
The right thing to do is so abundantly clear. The cannabis plant has been by our side and considered ‘essential’ for thousands of years. The right thing to do is to legalize it, create sensible regulations, treat it like a normal industry, and drop the charges on anyone that has been convicted of a non-violent marijuana-related crime. It can’t be both ‘essential’ and ‘criminal’ any longer.
One action you can take right now is to support legalization bills in your city or state if marijuana is not already legalized. It’s critical to ensure that the issue of 'cannabis criminals’ locked up or charged for using this plant gets addressed. New laws are being proposed all the time, so pay attention to what’s happening on a local and federal level. You can check out the Last Prisoner Project for more information and to get involved.
Another action you can take is to support your local cannabis businesses. If you don’t live in a state with legal marijuana laws, or even if you do, you can purchase hemp-derived CBD products online from trusted brands like UnCanny Wellness and get cannabis delivered to your door like that. Remember, hemp and marijuana are both cannabis, and CBD provides you with all the health but none of the high associated with THC-rich marijuana.

It’s hard to cut through the half-truths and misinformation to get down to what really matters. Don’t blame yourself for the confusion. Since starting my CBD company, UnCanny Wellness, in 2016, I’ve been witness to all the good and the bad in this “wild west” of an industry.
Some people out there will say anything just to take your money, but others are educating about this amazing plant extract and causing real, positive change.
With a background in the sciences and hands-on experience in cannabis cultivation, extraction, and processing, I can confidently tell you that choosing the right CBD product is simple if you know what to look for. Today, I’m going to highlight five key considerations you should know about before taking this dive and trying out CBD for yourself.
Even if you’re already a CBD user, these considerations can help you improve your experience and get the most out of this powerful plant compound. You deserve it!
1. Full spectrum, broad spectrum, or isolate?
There’s a wide range, a spectrum if you will, of different types of cannabis extracts containing CBD. The lack of regulation and standards in this young industry only makes it more difficult to figure out, but it’s an important distinction to make, and it’s not too hard to understand once it’s laid out simply instead of in ways meant to confuse you.
For ease of explanation, let’s consider orange juice, and let’s say you like to have it in the morning for the vitamin C. You can purchase that delicious OJ fresh-squeezed with extra pulp, refined with no pulp at all, or go right for a vitamin C supplement. It’s all similar and can accomplish your goal of getting some vitamin C into your system, but they’re clearly different.
The juice with extra pulp contains all the naturally occurring sugars, lots of fiber, and vitamin C. The juice with no pulp has had some components like the fiber removed, but still contains lots of the good stuff you were looking for. The supplement contains the Vitamin C you were looking for, but with none of the other parts of the orange that naturally occur with it.
This is similar to the breakdown between full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate-based CBD extracts. Full spectrum extracts are, as they sound, full of all the naturally occurring compounds found in the plant, which would include CBD as well as other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, polyphenols, etc. This is the fresh squeezed OJ with pulp and all the goodness.
Broad spectrum extracts are going to contain much of this spectrum of compounds, but not necessarily all of them. For example, at UnCanny Wellness we remove all traces of THC from our products, and that THC is technically a part of the “full spectrum,” so we refer to it as “broad spectrum” instead.
Lastly, a CBD isolate isn’t going to have any of those other naturally occurring plant compounds. The CBD has literally been isolated from all that other good stuff and removed to achieve a pharmaceutical grade purity.
Why this matters:
There are measurable benefits to a more holistic CBD extract that contains an array of other naturally occurring compounds besides just the CBD. This boost in efficacy is known as the “Entourage Effect,” and it is the cannabis equivalent of Aristotle’s famous saying, “the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.”
Terpenes, the aromatic compounds found in cannabis and other plants, have their own medicinal benefits. They work together with CBD and other cannabinoids to create the beneficial experience that so many people enjoy. There’s a synergistic relationship between all of these components, most of which we have yet to fully understand, and isolating CBD away from all it naturally occurs with entirely misses out on any of these benefits.
Hemp and marijuana are both the cannabis plant. It’s that simple. If the plant contains more than 0.3 percent THC, it’s considered marijuana, and if below 0.3 percent it’s considered hemp.
On the marijuana side are high-THC producing plants, which produce what would look like your typical “dank nug”—lots of resinous trichome crystals and hairs, an unpollinated female bud. These plants can also contain CBD and other cannabinoids, but are often bred for THC domination. It’s what you’ll find in the dispensaries of any states that have medical or recreational marijuana programs.
On the complete other side of the plant spectrum we would find industrial hemp. Although still cannabis, these plants are aesthetically and chemically quite different. They’re tall and planted together more closely, almost like bamboo, and instead of being produced for the extraction of cannabinoids, they’re grown for more “industrial” applications such as seed for food and fiber for clothing, animal bedding, hempcrete, bioplastics and more.
Industrial hemp often has both males and females in the field together, because the male pollen is needed to produce the seeds, and if being grown for fiber, it doesn’t matter if the “buds” get “seeded.” Now, for the first time in recorded history, the middle part of this plant spectrum is gaining a lot of attention: high-CBD hemp plants. They’re considered hemp because they contain 0.3 percent THC or less, but they’re bred and grown for high concentrations of CBD and other non-psychoactive cannabinoids.
Only the females are going to be bred, as the male pollen produces seeds and reduces cannabinoid concentration. Because of that, these high-CBD hemp buds are going to look a lot more like traditional marijuana buds. It’s the high-cannabinoid concentration that produces the resinous crystals we visually identify as being a quality product.
Why this matters:
Where you purchase your CBD product says a lot about what it’s going to contain. If you live in a marijuana legal state and go to a dispensary to purchase some CBD, it will likely contain more than 0.3 percent THC and be derived from marijuana, not hemp. Depending on the product and your tolerance, that might get you stoned. Nothing’s wrong with that, but it is something to be aware of if you’re trying to avoid any psychoactive effects.
In a natural food store, coffee shop, or any other non-dispensary place lawfully selling CBD products, you’re going to be getting a hemp-derived product with 0.3 percent THC or less. For many people this is preferable, not only because of the lack of THC, but also because it’s legal to take over state lines, order off the internet, or fly with.
CBD is super trendy. Although that trend is backed up by real science and real results, all this hype has attracted the attention of tricksters and others who may not have your best interests in mind.
Not all products out there are made with the same quality or intentions. While there are plenty of quality brands on the market that are creating products with integrity, there are just as many, if not more, that are carelessly putting CBD products together just to make a quick buck. The products available next to the e-cigs at the gas station are not likely made with the same quality extracts and ingredients that products sold at the organic natural foods store are.
That being said, this is such a young industry and it’s easy to get fooled, so it’s always best to do your own research into the product and the brand and discover for yourself whether they’re legit or not.
One easy thing to do is to read the ingredient label of the product. Are there a bunch of artificial ingredients that can’t be pronounced? You should probably steer clear of that. If you go onto the company’s website, do they tell you about themselves, their motivations, and their roots, or is it a faceless brand that only cares about selling something for a profit? If you reach out to them, are they helpful? Will they provide COAs (certificates of analysis)? All these are great questions to ask yourself when considering a new CBD product.
Why this matters:
Nasty chemicals and ingredients have no place in the same bottle as such a medicinal compound as CBD. Beyond detracting from the product’s therapeutic value, those nasty ingredients can even end up causing harm. Also, some product may not actually even contain the CBD that’s promised on the label!
Truth be told, these early days of the CBD industry are pretty wild, and some bad actors are taking advantage of the system. Doing a bit of your own research will pay off many times over. If you’re looking for a water-soluble product or a capsule, check us out at UnCanny Wellness. If you want an oil-based product, Bluebird Botanicals is a trusted, quality brand too.
A natural question that newcomers to CBD often ask is, “How can I tell if it’s working?”
The answer entirely depends on what you’re trying to achieve. For example, you might be taking CBD as a tool to prevent disease from arising, and to maintain a certain level of health and balance to support your active lifestyle. However, your neighbor might be taking it to help her body respond to inflammation after a spinal injury from a ski trip six years ago, and her partner might be taking it to help get a full night of sleep.
In that example, the frequency and quantity of CBD taken by the three individuals will be different. Part of the reason CBD is so popular is because of all the amazing ways in which it can support your body. In one sense, it can be seen as a supplement that should be taken along with the other vitamins and supplements you already take. The idea is that, just as we would supplement with Vitamin C if we’re naturally deficient, we should be supplementing with CBD if we’re naturally deficient in cannabinoids.
However, it can also be used situationally to help your body respond to specific conditions in a healthy way. If you break your arm, it would make sense to increase that dose to help reduce swelling and stimulate your bones to reform properly. We can look forward to a future when the science behind CBD, other cannabinoids, and the endocannabinoid system is demystified.
Only with further research will we be able to get to a place where CBD dosing protocols might be able to be determined by your doctor, or even more specifically mentioned on product packaging. Until that happens, it’s best to listen to yourself and figure out what works specifically for you and what you’re trying to achieve.
Why this matters:
CBD is something that nearly everyone should be taking. However, the amount that any given person should take varies greatly. A good rule of thumb is to “start low and go slow” until you find the dose that works for you. Everyone’s internal chemistry is different, and so is the reason that they’re turning to CBD. As a result, everyone will have slightly different CBD regimens that work perfectly for them.
The way that you want to introduce CBD to your body says a lot about the actual product you should look for. For example, CBD oil is ideal for use in creams and salves and rubbing into your skin. However, you wouldn’t want to simply drop some CBD oil into your post-yoga smoothie or morning coffee.
It all comes down to “bioavailability,” which is the scientific word for the measurement of how much of any given drug compound, in this case being CBD, actually ends up successfully entering your body and traveling to where it needs to go. Not all types of drug compounds, both natural and synthetic, can be absorbed equally. In fact, there’s actually a lot of variability. Understanding and planning for this absorption variability is the essence of pharmacokinetics—the science of drug delivery.
CBD oil, which constitutes the vast majority of what’s available on the market, is typically diluted with a “carrier oil” of sorts (hemp seed, MCT, etc.) before going into final form, like a vape, tincture, cream, balm, or salve. In all those applications, it actually makes sense to be using an oil-form of CBD. However, CBD oil has major issues being properly absorbed through food and drink in the stomach.
This is not a newly discovered problem; many drug compounds face this same obstacle, but it is relatively new for this young industry. Luckily, brilliant scientists have already developed techniques that can convert CBD oil from its natural state to a format that can be effectively absorbed in the stomach. At UnCanny Wellness, we specialize in water-soluble CBD powder products that are designed for increased bioavailability in the stomach.
So, whether you’re consuming CBD in a capsule or mixing into your morning coffee, this water-soluble, converted form of CBD will be far better to use.
Why this matters:
It’s a real shame when someone gives up trying to take CBD because they’ve had an awkward experience and deemed the whole experiment unsuccessful. It’s so important to be taking the right form in the right way so that you can get the dose you’re actually expecting. The difference can be huge!
For example, CBD oil in the stomach has absorption rates as low as 10-20 percent. Using a water-soluble powder or some other further-converted format can increase those absorption rates to 90-100 percent. Imagine sitting down to enjoy a nice meal and only getting 10 percent of what you expected on your plate…you probably wouldn’t be too happy.
Plenty of great CBD options exist on the market, but there are probably more that aren’t the right choice and it’s up to you to get knowledgeable on the subject so that you can make the best decisions for yourself and your loved ones. Be curious, ask questions, and experiment to see what works best for you. Most of all, enjoy yourself and look forward to the benefits that CBD has in store for you!

A trend is sweeping across the United States that has infiltrated small towns and big cities from coast to coast. People from all walks of life are dropping it under their tongue, rubbing it into their skin, vaping it, drinking it, and eating it, and are becoming healthier, happier people as a result.
This popular new botanical is hemp-derived CBD.
Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, is extracted from hemp and has many powerful therapeutic properties – but doesn’t get you stoned. It’s the biggest and most exciting trend in natural products that most people have ever seen in their lives.
CBD is a cannabinoid, a type of natural chemical compound produced in the body of all mammals and found in the cannabis plant, that interacts with many different pathways and organs. It works to regulate our nervous and immune system and returns the body to a balanced state.
CBD is popping up everywhere… in gas stations, bookstores, and grocery stores in the form of edibles, tinctures, creams, and snacks. One of the most exciting places the CBD is emerging is, of course, in cafes and coffee shops in the form of infused drinks.
In many ways CBD and Coffee are a match made in heaven. After all, cannabis and coffee have been two of humanities most treasured plants for millennia, and have deep roots in ritual and culture.
CBD can reduce the negative side effects of caffeine.
Though CBD and caffeine are considered to have opposing effects, they actually turn out to complement one another beautifully. Any coffee enthusiast knows that sometimes drinking too much caffeine can induce jittery, anxious, edgy feelings. Now we can use CBD to smooth out that edge without detracting from the benefits.
How does this work?
The caffeine in coffee binds to your brains adenosine receptors, preventing the brains naturally-produced adenosine from properly binding to its receptors, which would normally induce drowsiness, slow down your nerve cell activity, and prepare you for sleep. With caffeine blocking those receptors the opposite occurs – your neuron activity speeds up and as a result, adrenaline is released.
Adrenaline is responsible for the ‘fight or flight’ response in your body, causing the negative side effects of too much coffee. Luckily, one of CBD’s many abilities is to directly activate some of your serotonin receptors, which means you can get anti-anxiety effects alongside the energy boost of caffeine. It truly is the best of both worlds.
There are two approaches to CBD coffee on the market.
The first method is to infuse the coffee beans with CBD oil. It’s a natural first step for the industry to take because all CBD extract starts off as an oil. Unfortunately, to the detriment of the unsuspecting consumer, CBD oil doesn’t absorb properly in the stomach, doesn’t mix well into coffee, and has a pretty strong flavour. Also, certain brewing processes can strip the CBD oil right out of the beans.
There is another way. The second approach to CBD coffee emerged as a solution to those problems and is what we at UnCanny Wellness specialize in with our Barista Blend product. We convert CBD oil to a water-soluble powder, making it easier to work with and far more bioavailable in the stomach. This unique formulation is versatile, simple, and can easily go into any drink you already love to make.
It makes far more sense to use a water-soluble powder. Think about it… you have your preferences for the source of your beans, roasting style, equipment etc, all in pursuit of the perfect cup. You probably don’t want to buy coffee from a CBD company, and don’t want oil to be ineffective and ruin the experience. Instead, you can brew coffee the way you like (or any other drink for that matter) and simply infuse it with a small amount of CBD powder that readily dissolves into the liquid.
Where do we go from here?
While CBD is legal on a federal level in the US, there are still plenty of hurdles to overcome. Yes, it has a lot of hype around it, but the fact remains that it is actually changing people’s lives for the better every day.
From a wider view we can see that hemp CBD and cannabis as a whole is just now emerging from many decades of unfair prohibition, and it’s only going to continue going mainstream. CBD is already here, being sold in coffee shops across the US, providing cafes with a boost in profits and happier, healthier customers and staff.
In fact it might even be part of a far larger trend. Adding things like CBD, MCT oil, or adaptogenic mushrooms to coffee are all a part of some trend to go beyond what’s possible with coffee alone, creating unique experiences that are able to benefit us in unique ways.
If the 3rd wave of coffee consisted of getting as intimate with the bean as possible, maybe the 4th wave goes beyond the bean. However, I’m not the one to claim that the 4th wave of coffee is here – you can be the judge of that.

]]>At the end of November the FDA released two separate statements... One of which was 15 different warning letters to CBD companies, the other one was a consumer update. If you’ve seen these articles or headlines in the news, you might be pretty concerned. There are many articles out there saying that the FDA has cracked down on CBD, but that is not the reality of the situation. Truthfully, not much has changed at all!
So what has the FDA been saying?
Before the statement came out at the end of November, the FDA already had a very negative stance against the CBD industry. After the 2018 Farm Bill passed and the policy for hemp and CBD products was handed over from the DEA to the FDA, we knew that it was going to take some time for them to update their position on this substance.
People have been waiting all year for them to come out with new regulations, and in the meantime, the industry has not been waiting -- it is continuing to grow! Although, if you went on the FDA website, you would find that CBD is technically not allowed in food, drinks, or supplements. Which makes you think -- all of the products out there are food, drinks, or supplements. But the precedent was set early on, that if companies are doing the right thing and operating with integrity, then nothing illegal was being done. Instead, the only companies getting in trouble were the ones making health claims, which is the big thing NOT to do -- not only in CBD, but in the whole supplement industry in general!
What are these warning letters?
At the end of November there was a round of warning letters that went out to 15 different companies who were making a variety of health claims. Some of these companies were going as far as listing tabs on their website about cancer and opioid addiction -- very, very specific things that anybody could have told you are total red flags for the FDA! In addition to the warning letters, they issued a consumer update as well, which had some less than ideal comments about CBD. For example, that the compound “has the potential to harm you” and may have some toxic effects, impact your liver, memory production, the list goes on. What they failed to mention though, is that a lot of these studies were not reflective of the products currently out in the market.
Many studies that have been done by the pharmaceutical industry on CBD have been for very very high doses of isolate, which is very different than the full or broad spectrum, whole plant extracts that are in the products out there. In some of these studies they were doing, if you took the same equivalent of milligrams of CBD per kilogram of body weight, it would literally be thousands of milligrams of CBD. In reality, most people out there are taking 10 mg - 100 mg and is a more holistic extract than the isolate. As much as we would love for the FDA to come out with a full set of policies so the whole industry can move forward, it's a little more complicated than that.
Why is the FDA so complicated?
A lot of this complication comes from the pharmaceutical drug called Epadialex, which you can get prescribed by a doctor if you have a debilitating epilepsy condition. You can’t go to the doctor and get prescribed a drug, and then also go to the natural foods store or cafe and get that same compound added into your product. That’s just not how it works, and makes this a very unique situation for the FDA. We definitely don’t envy their position where they have to find out when to draw the line between pharmaceutical or supplement.
So that being said, really nothing has changed! More so, the FDA really dug their heels into the ground reiterating their original position, and in the same week that the FDA came out with these regulations, Canopy Growth, one of the largest cannabis holding companies, launched a line containing nearly 15 different seltzers and chocolates, all infused with CBD. So it’s very clear that, although the FDA has not said which CBD products are really legal to use, this multi-billion dollar industry is continuing to move forward.
To keep it simple, if you’re a CBD company… DON’T make health claims! Companies shouldn’t be making claims that promise the healing of any kind of chronic illness or disease. Over time, the FDA will come out with the right regulations...but don’t hold your breath, because it may not happen any time soon. What do you think about the FDA’s stance on CBD? ]]>In honor of Thanksgiving, we’re going back in time to reminisce at the history of hemp! Hemp has been a crucial crop for thousands of years, and has played a huge role in the establishment and growth of the United States. If you weren’t made aware of these already, here’s some hemp history facts for you to impress your relatives with at your holiday family dinner party:
The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp.
This noteworthy crop helped to officiate the beginning of the United States! In order to turn this plant into paper, the strong fibers from the stalk are smashed down into rough, thin sheets. Hemp-based paper is far more sustainable and durable than regular tree-based paper and only takes a little over 3 months to mature. Thomas Jefferson said himself that “hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country.”
You could pay your taxes with hemp!
For nearly 150 years, instead of handing over some cash to pay up on your taxes, you could hand over hemp (talk about a valuable crop). This was a tactic by the government that encouraged more farmers to cultivate their own hemp plants. Their incredibly strong fibers were extremely sought out as it is one of the most versatile crops on the planet!
Hemp was crucial for supporting war efforts.
A few years into the Marihuana Tax Act, which made the plant illegal in 1937, it was actually lifted and re-legalized cultivation. Farmers were actually required to grow hemp in order to support war efforts in the United States. In 1942, a US Government film made during WWII was released named ‘Hemp for Victory’, explaining the uses of hemp and encouraging farmers to grow as much as humanly possible. The reasoning behind this was that hemp plants were incredibly useful for turning into rope for military ships and were known for having antifungal and antimicrobial properties.
It built some legendary cars!
Incredibly enough, hemp can be refined into both biofuel and plastic material. This fuel can power all of our vehicles, and the plastic material is 100% biodegradable unlike traditional plastic. Remember the Model T Ford in 1908? That vehicle had a hemp plastic body and was designed to run on hemp fuel! Talk about plant power.
You get the point, hemp is a pretty bad-ass plant and has a million different uses. That’s probably enough facts for you to start up a conversation with Aunt Helen who’s going to ask why you put CBD in the cranberry sauce. Want to learn even more about hemp?
